As the 2023-24 NHL season is coming to a close, the playoff race is heating up. With just a few weeks left of games, there is a tight race towards the top of the standings, as well as the wild card race. There have been many individual milestones that have been achieved during this season, season wide or career wide. Let's check on the current stats and standings as the season winds down:

Auston Matthews - The forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs has hit the 60-goal mark for the 2nd time in his career, hitting his 62nd of the season against the Florida Panthers. He is the front runner for the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy for the 3rd time in his career.

Connor McDavid - The forward for the Edmonton Oilers is doing what he has been doing ever since he joined the league, and that is taking control of the league. McDavid has the chance to do something that hasn't happened since the 1990's: Hitting the 100-assist mark. He recorded a league best 65 goals last season, and he will lead the league in the opposite category to end this season.

Nikita Kucherov - The forward for the Tampa Bay Lightning is looking for his 2nd career Art Ross Trophy, with the race being as tight as can be. He is currently tied with Avalanche forward Nathan Mackinnon, with Oilers forward Connor McDavid trailing by one point. Kucherov hit the 40-goal mark for the 3rd time in his career, sitting at 42 currently.

NHL in the Olympics It is official. The National Hockey League is allowing current players to compete in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, Italy. Commissioner Gary Bettman announced just a few days ago that the Olympics were a "go" in both 2026 and 2030. The NHL hasn't allowed players to compete in the Olympics since 2014. In 2018, it was the first year they wouldn't send players to compete for the sake of scheduling regular season games, as well as no pause for a few weeks in February. In 2022, it was mainly COVID that made them opt out for a second straight time. There was a pause in the NHL regular season because of the disease, so keeping players in North America was probably for the better.  In 2014, the two teams that competed for the Gold Medal were Canada and Sweden. Canada ended up winning by a score of 3-0, with goals coming from Jonathan Toews (Chicago Blackhawks), Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins), and Chris Kunitz (Pittsburgh Penguins).
